Preparation

In order to be successful, the Day of Evangelization takes a great deal of preparation. First, you must pray, the success of this event depends on the Holy Spirt, and not on our human intervention alone. Next, you must have the direct support and involvement of your pastor. And if you are the pastor your participation is crucial. You also want as many people in the parish involved in the preparation and on the Day itself. Since door-to-door evangelization is a work of the Legion of Mary, the parish Legion should sponsor the Day of Evangelization.

Preparation for the Day of Evangelization must begin several months before the actual day. Start out by forming a core team. The core team should include the pastor and any other priests on the parish staff, the president of the Legion of Mary, and a few other people. It would be most beneficial, but not necessary to have someone who has been involved in a previous Day of Evangelization.

The following list includes areas of responsibility:

The Pastor

  • Decide on materials for the evangelization packet (see samples under resources)
  • Recruit as many workers as possible
  • Prepare notices for the parish bulletin
  • Appeal to the parish with pulpit announcements
  • Write a letter to those to be visited, with flyer of Mass times and other information

The Parish

  • Recruit as many workers as possible
  • Recruit volunteers to set up, buy food, and set it out and clean up.

The Legion of Mary

  • Send a flyer inviting other area Legionaries to help out on the day
  • Prepare map showing streets of the parish and divide it accordingly
  • Recruit workers
  • Put packets together
  • Assign pairs for door-to-door visits
  • Follow up calls
  • Solicit Markets (stores) for tote bags to carry evangelization packets (see pastor’s letter)

Prepare the schedule of the day. Use it for promotion and registration. Success of the Day depends on proper promotion. Prepare enough packets for the visitations. Every stop will not have someone home.
